NSOU vs IGNOU: which to choose

For a student living in West Bengal who prefers instruction in Bengali, NSOU is a suitable choice. NSOU offers Self Learning Materials (SLMs) in Bengali and English for its undergraduate programmes, and teaching is in vernacular. Answers can be written in Bengali or English. The university has 146 Learner Support Centres (LSCs) across West Bengal for UG learners in 2026-27. IGNOU offers programmes in English and Hindi, with no specific mention of Bengali medium instruction. IGNOU has a pan-India reach with 67 Regional Centres and nearly 2000 Learner Support Centres.

A student who might move out of West Bengal benefits from IGNOU’s wider network. NSOU’s mission is education all over West Bengal, and its LSCs are located within the state. NSOU degrees are recognised by all AIU members and are at par with other Indian universities. However, NSOU states that changing an LSC after admission requires an online application with a Rs. 500 fee, only for changes in service place, family shifting, or marital status.

For a student seeking an MBA, IGNOU is the only option between the two. IGNOU offers a Master of Business Administration with a total fee of Rs. 66,000 for the July 2026 session, with AICTE approval from 2022-23 to 2026-27. NSOU does not offer an MBA for 2026-27 admission, though MBA exams continue for earlier batches. Conversely, a student interested in a B.Ed. Special Education (ODL) programme will find it at NSOU. NSOU’s B.Ed. Special Education (IDD/HI/VI) ODL is recognised by RCI, New Delhi and UGC-DEB, with an intake of 400 students for the 2026-27 session.
